Interview The Gazette (06.11.2010)

Stunning view, lots of character and an ideal location

Sarah Barrable-Tishauer grew up in Toronto. A child actor and dancer, she appeared in the Toronto stage production of the Lion King and the popular TV series Degrassi -The Next Generation. Four years ago, she enrolled in Concordia University and moved to Montreal. As a full-time student, she no longer has time to act, but this summer, she and another of her Degrassi cast mates took a group of Canadian high school students to Rajasthan, India, where they worked on building a school for Free the Children, a non-profit organization that focuses on youngsters helping other youngsters, through education and leadership programs. On top of Sarah's coffee table is a photo album with handmade paper pages and a tooled leather cover, documenting the trip.

What a beautiful book! It must bring back memories. It looks as if you brought some other things back with you as well. This orange and blue wall hanging, for example, with the elephant motif. Was that another of your Indian souvenirs?

I bought a lot of things with elephants on them but it took me a while to realize why. It wasn't just because they're typical of India. I was very close to my late grandfather whose nickname was "Elly". He had rather prominent ears and a phenomenal memory! I guess, subconsciously, he was in my mind.

And the cushion covers? They certainly go well with your two suede, cherry-red sofas, parquet floors and wooden bookcase.

Rajasthan is a region known for arts and crafts. I came back with lots of rich textiles, which I've used to decorate the apartment. I appreciate good workmanship. The course that I'm taking at Concordia actually encompasses art -of the digital variety -as well as computer science.

Have you lived in this apartment since coming to Montreal?

No. In previous years I moved around the city quite a bit and always had roommates, but this term, I wanted a place of my own. This is really the first apartment that has felt like home. Four things appealed to me right away -the split-level living room, the balcony, the view, loads of cupboard space - and, of course, the area. The rent is a little higher than I would have liked -$875 a month -but I have a part-time job teaching digital art, so I can make ends meet. The apartment is close to the main Concordia campus and while I have to commute to N.D.G. for certain classes, it's an easy, 20-minute bus run. There are two grocery stores a couple blocks away, movie theatres at AMC and tons of cheap places to eat and hang out.

Was it easy for you to find a "home" rather than another student pad?

It took me a good six weeks of pounding the pavement, putting the word out to friends and scouring web-sites like Craigslist. My mom came through from Toronto one weekend to help me look and just as she was about to head back, I asked her to come with me to this place. I'd been trying to get in for ages, but each time I came by, there was never anybody around. The superintendent happened to be in this time and that was it. It took only 10 minutes for me to make up my mind.

(We step out onto the 14th floor balcony and Sarah shows me the view, all the way down to the Saint Lawrence River. I ask her about a plastic owl perched on the railing.)

Unfortunately, one of the down sides of having a balcony so high up, are pigeon droppings. I don't think the owl is doing too much to scare the birds away, but I don't mind. It's such a treat on a hot summer's night to step outside and watch the sunset. I can enjoy the sunsets from the penthouse as well. My rent includes access to an indoor swimming pool and sauna and the laundry area -all of which are on the top floor. It's such a pleasant spot, a couple of us were joking the other day that it would be a good idea for the landlord to install an espresso bar!
