Interview Teen Vogue de Stacey Farber

Hello to all the Canadians, Degrassi fans, and aspiring Teen Vogue interns who commented on my first blog entry!

I love hearing from you!

I will try my best to answer your questions, which I have divided into four categories below:

1. How did you go about applying for the internship?
Posted by: nessbess88

I applied through a contact I made while interning at NYLON Magazine.  After she was hired to work for Teen Vogue's Art Department, I e-mailed her and she got me in touch with the Associate Fashion Market Editor, Mary Kate Steinmiller (at the time, I thought I wanted to pursue another Fashion Department internship).  I sent Mary Kate a cover letter and my resume, and then met with her for an interview late October.  When I expressed an interest in writing for the magazine, she said that she would pass my information along to the Online Editor, EJ.  EJ e-mailed me and we set up a second interview and, well, you know the rest of the story.

Traditionally, it's best to get in touch with the publisher's Human Resources department.  Find out who is responsible for hiring interns for the publication (sometimes it's the managing editor or a junior-level editor), ask what the specific procedures are for applying, and see if you can e-mail your [tailored] cover letter and resume.  Study the magazine’s masthead to know who works in each department and which person you would need to send the documents to.

2. What classes should I take if I want to become a Teen Vogue intern?

Relevant high school courses will vary depending on the department you are interested in (and what your school offers).  For an editorial/web internship, I'd recommend taking classes connected to writing, communications, media studies, etc.  Try writing for your school paper!  Fashion editors might favor students who have taken courses like art, photography, and fashion studies.  Is there a school fashion show you could run or help out with?  If you're taking mostly required courses this year, consider signing up for relevant extracurricular activities!

3. Do you have to be in New York to intern?
Posted by:  kathynicole, niki19

New York City is one of the largest media hubs in the United States.  That being said, publications have smaller offices (with fewer internship positions) in other locations--Teen Vogue has one in Los Angeles. There are probably also local magazines and newspapers that you could intern at in cities closer to home.

4. Do you have to intern for school credit?  What are the start/end times of an internship?
Posted by: que_tu_est_mignon

From what I've heard, most internships (in this industry) offered during the school year for college students require that interns receive school credit.  Summer internships are more competitive because there are a lot more applicants and while they might not be offered for credit, the internships are typically unpaid.

Internships for credit usually run for a whole semester.  Fall internships begin in September and end in early December (apply in July).  Spring internships run from January to early May (apply in November).

Hope this helps, and that your 2008 is off to a great start!
